Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt (SW 6204) in Florida Homes
Some colors are popular everywhere. Sea Salt (SW 6204) is popular here — in a state wrapped in Gulf water, screened lanais, and palm-filtered light, this soft blue-green-gray has become the closest thing Florida has to a signature interior color. It's been a favorite since it debuted in the early 2000s, and it's the color our coastal customers ask for by name more than any other with actual pigment in it. It's also a true chameleon — the same gallon can look green at breakfast, blue at dusk, and gray on a cloudy day — which makes it wonderful when it's right and a surprise when it's not. Here's how Sea Salt actually behaves, room by room and hour by hour, from painters who put it on Tampa Bay walls every month.
What Sea Salt actually looks like
Sea Salt is a muted blend of blue, green, and gray, with the gray doing quiet but essential work: it softens what could be a nursery aqua into something calm and grown-up. Its LRV is 63 — light enough to keep a room airy, saturated enough that nobody mistakes it for an off-white. Think sea glass, or shallow Gulf water over pale sand on an overcast morning.
On the wall it's a background, not a shout. It reads as a neutral with a point of view, which is exactly why designers have kept it in rotation for twenty years while louder colors came and went.
Sea Salt in Florida light (the chameleon, explained)
No color we sell needs the sample rule more than this one:
- Bright morning sun: the green side wakes up first. Sea Salt reads fresh and sage-like, especially against white trim — this is the version in most of the photos you'll find online.
- Afternoon and evening: as the light softens, the blue and gray come forward and the room turns moodier and more serene. Under warm lamps it settles into a blue-gray that feels like dusk over the water.
- North-facing or shaded rooms: cool light pulls the gray hardest; Sea Salt can go almost stormy blue-gray. Still beautiful — but if you fell for the green version, sample first.
- South-facing Florida rooms: strong golden sun can cancel some of the blue and leave you with a softer, warmer green than you expected. Again: the wall sample, checked at three times of day, is the only honest preview.
Where Sea Salt works best
Bathrooms. Its natural home. Sea Salt with white tile, brushed nickel or chrome, and a little natural wood is the spa bathroom every homeowner describes wanting — calm, clean, and coastal without a single seashell decoration required.
Primary bedrooms. A color that literally changes to a sleepier blue-gray by evening is doing you a favor in a bedroom. It's restful without being dark, and it makes white bedding look expensive.
Coastal living rooms and kitchens. With white cabinets, light counters, and a view of palms or water, Sea Salt gives a living space that relaxed, breezy feel — enough color to have character, soft enough to live with every day. It pairs beautifully with Agreeable Gray in adjoining rooms when you want the open plan to flow.
Laundry rooms and entryways. Smaller, hardworking spaces where a little color lifts the mood and hides the scuffs of daily life better than a white would.
Porch and lanai ceilings. Down South, blue-green porch ceilings are a generations-old tradition — said to echo the sky and keep the space feeling open. On a screened Florida lanai, Sea Salt on the ceiling is that tradition in a stock color, and it's one of our favorite small upgrades in the state.
Sea Salt on the exterior
Used at full-body scale, Sea Salt gives a coastal cottage or beach-area home an unmistakable look — lovely on shaded, tree-covered lots and anywhere near the water. Two honest cautions: delicate blue-greens are more fade-prone than neutrals in direct Florida sun, especially on south and west elevations, so we spec them in a premium line; and on a big two-story in full sun, the color can read lighter and greener than the chip promises. Where Sea Salt always works outside, no caveats: front doors, shutters, and lanai ceilings — statement scale, easy to refresh. On product: SuperPaint Satin is our standard go-to, but for color like this outdoors our honest preference is Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald — better fade resistance, and the right long-run investment when repainting later costs more every year.
Colors that pair with Sea Salt
- Trim and ceilings: Pure White for crisp contrast, or Alabaster for a softer, warmer edge — trim and doors in our standard Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
- Adjoining rooms: Agreeable Gray or Accessible Beige keep the flow calm
- Deeper partners from its own strip: Comfort Gray, Oyster Bay, and Retreat take the same hue moodier for a dining room or study
- It loves: natural wood, rattan and jute, white and stone tile, brushed nickel, live greenery
What it costs to put Sea Salt on your walls
The color is the same price as any color — the job is the job. Full interior repaints in Tampa Bay, from real scenarios we priced this year, land between roughly $4,000 and $13,000: a 950-square-foot condo, walls only, at $4,020; a 1,500-square-foot ranch with walls, ceilings, and baseboards at $8,337; a 2,300-square-foot two-story full package at $13,067. Full exteriors run roughly $3,600 to $13,400 and up. Most of the money is prep and protection — the masking, taping, patching, and covering that make a soft color like this dry down smooth and even instead of streaky. We paint to full, even coverage, and our homeowner work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty.
Supplies we actually use
Painting a room in Sea Salt? This soft blue-green shows every lint speck and every tape bleed, so the prep supplies matter as much as the paint. Here's the exact kit our crew loads on the truck for a Sea Salt bedroom or bathroom:
- FrogTape Multi-Surface painter's tape — for cut lines that come off clean
- ScotchBlue Pre-Taped Painter's Plastic — masks windows, tubs, and floors in one pass
- Trimaco SuperTuff canvas drop cloth, 9x12 — heavy canvas that stays put and gets reused job after job
- Purdy XL Glide 2.5-inch angled sash brush — our cut-in brush for ceilings and trim
- DAP DryDex spackling paste — fills nail holes; turns white when it's ready to sand
- DAP ALEX PLUS caulk, white — seals trim gaps and paints over in about 30 minutes
- Warner 5-in-1 painter's tool — the one tool that's always in a back pocket
- Purdy Revolution 9-inch roller frame — light and rigid; the cage doesn't flex mid-wall
- Purdy Power Lock extension pole, 2–4 ft — locks solid at any length, no twist-slip on ceilings
- Purdy Revolution adjustable roller frame, 12–18 inch — the 18-inch setup that lays off big open walls fast
- Purdy 10-in-1 folding prep tool — folds shut and rides in a pocket all day
- Pretty Boy Paint Cleaner & Conditioner — the soap that keeps our brushes and covers alive

Frequently asked questions
Is Sea Salt blue or green?
Both, and that's the honest answer. It's a blue-green held together by a gray undertone, and your light decides which side shows: bright sun pulls green, soft or cool light pulls blue-gray. If your heart is set on one specific version, the sample on your wall — morning, noon, and evening — is the only way to know which one your room will give you.
Does Sea Salt work in a small bathroom with no window?
Yes, with a tweak: in a windowless room, your bulbs are the light, so choose them deliberately. Warm-white bulbs (around 3000K) keep Sea Salt soft and spa-like; harsh daylight bulbs can push it cold and blue. Good lighting plus white fixtures makes a small Sea Salt bathroom feel fresh, not dark — its LRV of 63 reflects enough light to keep the room open.
What trim color goes with Sea Salt?
Pure White is the classic pairing — the crisp edge makes Sea Salt's color read clean and intentional. Alabaster is the softer option if your home runs warm. Either way, we put trim and doors in Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel for a finish that scrubs clean. If you're looking for a house painter near me who samples the trim pairing on the wall next to the color, not just in a fan deck, that's how we do it.
